Sounds like the OP fessed up to the problem at the top: despite hating large companies, they signed up to a fixed bid project as an independent contractor. Given how big companies work, that’s recipe for danger.

Scale is very powerful, but it takes a lot of work to get things done. Large companies have a ton of waste, but getting to “this can work for all of us” has a very big impact.
